Well, after spending way too much time on this shot, I decided to finally release it! The shot isn't perfect though (which shot is?) but I feel like it was time for me to move on to the next one.
This time I wanted to learn more 2D, 2.5D techniques and also improve my compositing skills with Nuke.
Through a fabulous course given by Emilis Baltrusaitis (available on Yiihuu.com), I discovered a workflow that was totally unknown to me until now: mainly matte painting and 3D projection here. I have also learned to use Clarisse iFX, which is really a great software to create large environments: its ability to handle geo instances is simply amazing.
I really enjoyed doing this sequence. I have to say that Emilis is one of the best teacher I've ever follow.
You can find a detailed description of the workflow to produce such a shot on his Youtube channel (search: Monsoon Breakdown).
Tip of the month: Speaking of breakdown, to make this nice 3D breakdown effect in Nuke, you can simply use the "P_matte" guizmo keyer downloadable on Nukepedia, connect its input to a World Position AOV pass, and animate the output mask along the vertical axis.
